Needs-Focused English Teaching - Highly Engaging Lessons for English Teachers


Central to the needs-focused approach is the satisfaction of three crucial psychological needs – the need to belong, to feel empowered and to have fun; the premise being that if these needs are being satisfied by the teacher, the pupils will feel less inclination to satisfy them themselves.

Effective teachers satisfy these needs as a matter of course – either consciously or unconsciously by the way they respond to pupils, by the atmospheres they create and by the activities they provide. When the needs are being met, behavior ceases to be such an issues as pupils have less need to misbehave.
